In 2020, my team and I visited Batu Caves, Gombak, to learn more about Hindu beliefs and religious practices. It was both an exciting getaway with my college mates and a valuable cultural learning experience. Since we were unfamiliar with the practices, language, and dos and don’ts, there were moments of confusion. Thankfully, the locals were kind and helpful, offering translations and guidance whenever we struggled.
I kept an open mind and even joined some prayers out of respect for the Hindu gods. I realized that while we each have our own beliefs, it is just as important to respect others. What amazed me most was the sincerity of the people, there were no entrance fees to the temples, only small offerings for blessings, and visitors were even welcomed with free food. I learned that on certain days, the temple serves vegetarian meals for the poor, homeless, and visiting devotees as part of their blessings.
The temple itself was breathtaking — colorful, detailed, and full of devotion in every handcrafted design. We also climbed the famous 272 steps to the top, where we had the unique chance to witness a wedding ceremony and were even invited to join in receiving blessings.
This visit left me with warm memories and a deeper appreciation of Hindu culture. The friendliness and generosity of the community, along with the meaningful practices I observed, made the experience unforgettable. I look forward to returning someday and sharing this cultural treasure with others.
